ALP veteran Tanya Plibersek has pulled out of the Labor leadership race, saying fellow ALP heavyweight Albo is the only one who has what it takes to face ScoMo – specifically a knock-about, matesy nickname ending in ‘o’.
Plibersek said her name counted her out of the race because it meant people might take her seriously.
The shadow foreign affairs and education minister said she considered changing her name to the single word ‘Pilbo’ but in the end decided to opt for self respect.
“I’ve thought long and hard about this decision, but ultimately I had to think about the responsibility to my family. My kids seeing their mum travel around the country referring to herself as ‘Pilbo’ was just something I couldn’t put them through,” she said.
Plibersek said it was no coincidence that Bill Shorten lost the recent election. “Shorto would have won easily,” she said.
Albo is the frontrunner for the role with Boweno also considered a possible contender.
