Donald Trump today dismissed suggestions his fiery phone call with Malcolm Turnbull had damaged the ‘special relationship’ between the two nations, saying America and Austria would continue to work closely together.
Leaked details of the conversation suggested the call was hostile, but the US President said the relationship remained strong. “It’s a great relationship, such a great relationship with Austria. And like I told Mr Turnbull, it’s is a great country. I’ve skied there, many times. Beautiful mountains. So nice,” he told journalists.
He said the two countries had an important military alliance. “Austria has supported us in many wars. Important wars. I know that,” he said.
Mr Turnbull said he would not be providing a running commentary on the issue.
